Expansions and Acquisitions in the MEMS Manufacturing Industry by Wayne
Tronics, one of the foremost MEMS foundries in the world, has decided to expand its headquarters and MEMS manufacturing facilities. Tronics has been operating for 14 years and has recently received a number of important investments from the US. After several years of profitable performance and a rise in bookings, Tronics has decided to invest in a larger headquarters in Grenoble where it will be expanding its already extensive MEMS manufacturing facilities.
Since 2003, the offices and cleans rooms of Tronic has been located in a 1400 square meter building. 8 years later, Tronics expanded to a more modern and spacious location, moving all offices and engineering labs across the street from their previous location.
However, this previous office space will continue to be used solely for MEMS manufacturing and will also have a new back-end clean room built into it as well. The added space will allow for more MEMS assembly capacity and improved process capabilities and automation. The current wafer fab will also remain in operation throughout the transition. Moreover, Tronics will be investing more than half a million euros, not including new equipment, to complete this project by end of year 2011.
"This significant step will be very positive for both our employees and customers. It prepares us for the strong growth we foresee in the next 5 years," says Peter Pfluger, CEO of Tronics.
Presently, Tronics has MEMS wafer fabs in France and the US, and also a significant presence in Asia. Tronics' services include MEMS design and high-volume MEMS manufacturing. The company offers MEMS devices and systems that can range from wafers to integrated custom components, they can also support early project phases where prototyping is required.
Founded in 1997, Tronics has 14 years of experience in developing, manufacturing, and packaging accelerometers, gyroscopes, micropumps, pressure sensors, switches, biodetectors and many more MEMS.
Bio-Rad Laboratories, a life science research and clinical diagnostics products manufacturer and distributor, has announced its acquisition of the microfluidic technology startup company, QuantaLife. Bio-Rad purchased the company for $162 million in cash plus potential future milestone payments.
QuantaLife also raised $17.2 million in venture capital funding in December 2010 for its digital PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) system that provides quantification of target molecules with a reportedly unprecedented precision and sensitivity.
"We are impressed with QuantaLife's digital PCR technology and believe it will complement Bio-Rad's existing amplification business," said Norman Schwartz, Bio-Rad President and CEO. "This elegant solution expands the current state of the art methods of quantitative PCR (qPCR), and we look forward to its adoption in life science research."
Located Pleasanton, California, QuantaLife is an independent life sciences company that has develoepd advanced genetic analysis systems for research. QuantaLife has commercialized its "droplet digital" (ddPCR) system, which according to the company says is the most accurate genetic analysis platform available today. The company states that the system is the first cost-effective, high-resolution platform available for the validation of next-generation sequencing discoveries. With the ddPCR system, researchers can explore complex genetic landscapes in high-definition, discover new disease associations, and define a new category of improved molecular diagnostic tests.
As a manufacturer and distributor of a wide range of products for life science research clinical diagnostic markets, Bio-Rad has strived to remain at the center of scientific discovery for more than 50 years. The company's client base has grown to include universities, major research institutions, hospitals, as well as biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Founded in 1952, Bio-Rad is headquartered in Hercules, California, and serves more than 100,000 research and industry customers worldwide through its global network of operations. The company employs over 6,800 people globally and had revenues exceeding $1.9 billion in 2010.
